SAMBURU NATIONAL RESERVE

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Home to big cats; lion, leopard and cheetah
  • Birding “hot spot” with over 450 recorded species
  • Abundant wildlife including the Big Five
  • Rare Northern Species including Grevy’s Zebra, Somali Ostrich, Beisa Oryx, Reticulated Giraffe

Bordering the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River and neighbouring the Buffalo Springs National Park, Samburu National Reserve is remote, hot and arid. The reserve spans over 165 square kilometres of spectacularly scenic landscape featuring rugged hills, undulating plains and riverine forests. The park is home to abundant wildlife including a variety of rare species such as the reticulated giraffe, the long necked gerenuk, Somali ostrich, Grevy’s Zebra and Beisa Oryx. Samburu was one of the homes of ‘Elsa the Lioness’, star of the best-selling book and award-winning movie ‘Born Free’.

SAMBURULAND

Samburuland is a large part of the country southeast of Lake Turkana. For the last four hundred years it has been inhabited by the traditionally nomadic Samburu people, who are closely related to the Maasai, and speak the same language. People and wildlife co-exist here as they have done for centuries. From authentic kijijis (Samburu villages) to incredible elephants; from singing wells to soaring mountains, this area offers one of the most unique cultural experiences in Kenya
